Inspiration Sunday: Julia Mancuso

I have been suffering from a severe case of Olympic Fever.  This is odd because I think anyone that would WILLINGLY be outside in the cold for hours and hours in the winter is certifiably insane, but nevertheless I have been infected and the only cure is sitting around for hours watching curling and skating and skiing and hockey.  It's a tough disease but I'm determined to beat it (after the Closing Ceremony).

Did the commercial above make you a little emotional when you first saw it?  I already wrote about how I cried myself to sleep about the Dan Jansen one with his sister Jane and daughter Jane.  This one about Julia Mancuso, who won two silver medals this Olympics in downhill skiing, also made me tear up.  Why does Visa want me to be miserable?  Do they think I'll shop more if I'm depressed?

Anyway, the gist of the commercial is that Julia Mancuso drew a picture of herself winning a gold medal when she was a little girl and hung it on the wall of her room.  In 2006, she accomplished her dream.  Simple, but inspiring.  I think the idea of working for your dreams, no matter how far away and gigantic they seem, is a good way to live.  I could quote some Langston Hughes here just to show off my English Lit degree, but I think you get the idea.

So congrats to Julia Mancuso.  I can't remember the dreams I had when I was 5, but my sister Kerry wanted to be both a purple horse and a bus driver.  She's 25 and hasn't done either, but I have high hopes someday she'll win a gold medal in the Equine Bus Driving Olympics.
